WELCOME!

This event is the fifth in a series of symposia targeted to unite Latin American and US scientists in the area of surface science. The symposium is being organized by Professor Francisco Zaera of the University of California, Riverside and Professor Pedro Nascente of the Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil.

Tentatively, the Symposium is planned to start with a two-day Summer School for young scientists, and will be followed by a five-day conference that will include keynote, invited, and contributed talks as well as a couple of poster sessions.  A second two-day Summer School will follow afterwards.  Participation from US and European as well as Central and South American scientists in all aspects of this Symposium will be encouraged.

The San Luis Symposium series has been designed to foster new collaborations between researchers from the US, Latin America and Europe for research in the chemistry of surfaces, with particular emphasis on heterogeneous catalysis. The previous four San Luis Symposia were held in San Luis and Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 1994 and 2000, respectively, in Merida, Venezuela in 2004, and in Cuernavaca, Mexico in 2007, and were deemed great successes. They resulted in the development of over a dozen new collaborations, and yielded excellent special issues in the journal Langmuir and The Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical. The proceedings of this Fifth San Luis Symposium will be published in a special issue of Topics in Catalysis.
