Chemistry SURF Student - Joey Allison , University of Arkansas CIS-TRANS ISOMERIZATION OF BUTENE ON Pt/SiO2 Joseph T. Allison , Ricardo Morales, and Francisco Zaera The focus of this research is measuring the kinetics of the conversion of both cis- and trans-2-butene on a silica-supported platinum catalyst by using a small micro-batch reactor with gas chromatography detection and to characterize the catalyst (Pt/SiO 2 ) using infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed carbon monoxide. Characterization of the kinetics would allow a better understanding of the overall reaction. Industry can use this information to better tailor products to their needs and apply this research to issues in food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and petroleum research. It can also be used to reduce the amount of side products in catalytic reactions. Preliminary tests without the catalyst have been conducted to standardize the gas chromatograph and to obtain data sets. The preliminary tests will be applied to future research for comparison to the results obtained from the tests with the catalyst. We have also obtained the most effective means of activating the catalyst << Back to Participants/Project Abstracts Main Page
